Description
The McCarthy lab focuses on a group of mesenchymal cells in the intestine collectively called "the niche". The niche functions to support proper intestinal stem cell homeostasis and regeneration. How the niche responds during intestinal damage is unclear. Using a combination of mouse genetics, in vitro organoid cultures, transcriptomics, and high-resolution imaging, the McCarthy lab aims to characterize the niche in intestinal disease. Undergraduates will help assist with routine laboratory techniques, including genotyping (polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis), mouse intestinal tissue processing, slide preparation, immunohistochemistry, and imaging. Preferred prerequisites include biology-focused major at the sophomore or junior level, but enthusiastic freshmen should apply!
