NC State
CURiOuS @ NC State

Research Mentors:

  1. Any faculty member, staff member, graduate student, or post-doc completing science research at NC State can register as a research mentor on CURiOuS.  Registered research mentors can post and edit undergraduate research opportunities.  Research mentors can also compile and sort student applications for individual positions, and contact qualified applicants.
  2. To register as a research mentor, email Dana Thomas (dcthoma4@ncsu.edu) if your research has a biology focus, Josh Pierce (jgpierce@ncsu.edu) if you are associated with the Chemistry Department, or Laura Holland (laura_holland@ncsu.edu) if you are associated with the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences.  They will add your unity ID to the CURiOuS system.  You will receive an automated email containing a link to activate your account.  Click on the link.  IGNORE the new user name and password provided by the link.  CLOSE the link, then reopen it with the normal website url (https://sites.sciences.ncsu.edu/curious/) and log in with your normal unity ID and password.  You are now a registered research mentor!
  3. Once you are registered as a research mentor, you can sign in to post/edit positions and manage student applications.  Go to “Post a Research Position” or “Research Mentor Dashboard” and sign in with your normal unity ID and password.
  4. To post a research position, go to “Post a Research Position”, sign in, and fill in the required fields, and hit “submit”.  There are also several optional fields through which you can add more detail about your research opportunity if applicable.
  5. Click on “Research Mentor Dashboard” to view all of your research position postings (students can not see things on this page).  Next to each position you can see how many students have submitted an application.  Click on the number to view all applications in detail.  You can filter students by “status” (interviewed, offer extended, etc.) or sort them by their name, rating, or credits completed.  Below each individual student application you will see a red banner containing the specifics of the application, as well as features that allow you to rate the quality of a student’s application and make notes (students will NOT be able to see this):screenshot
  6. You can click “mark filled” once a position is filled.  This will alert all applicants.

NC State Students:

  1.  Go to “Find a Research Position” to search all current undergraduate research opportunities.  You can search for positions by “keyword”, “category” (science sub-discipline), and by “credit available”, “paid”, and “volunteer”.
  2. If you find a position that interests you, please read through the entire posting carefully to ensure that you qualify.
  3. To apply for a specific research opportunity, simply click “apply for position” and complete the required application fields.  A resume an unofficial transcript are required as part of the application.  Please answer the statement of interest, qualifications, and goals section with care (be sure to proofread).  Reference specific aspects of the research opportunity that interest you!  If the research mentor asks for any supplemental information as part of the application, there is an optional field for this at the end.
  4. After you click “submit”, you should receive an automated response from CURiOuS confirming that your application was received.  If you are among the top applications for a position, you will be contacted by the research mentor directly.
  5. Contact Dana Thomas (dcthoma4@ncsu.edu) if you have technical difficulties!
