Description
In the US, 26% of adults have one or more disabilities; yet only 10% of STEM undergraduates are disabled, and 7% of STEM Ph.D.s are awarded to students with disabilities. Ongoing research in the Department of Biological Sciences shows that while only 4% of NC State students receive DRO accommodations, 19% of Biological Sciences students self-identified as having one or more disabilities. The goals of this research are to 1. identify barriers that prevent students from seeking accommodations and using accommodations they have been granted; 2. understand faculty perspectives about students with disabilities; and 3. identify specific practices that positively and negatively impact the educational experiences of disabled students in and out of the classroom at NC State.
Undergraduate researchers involved in this project will perform literature reviews, help develop, administer, and analyze surveys, and will potentially undergo training to carry out semi-structured interviews. Prior to beginning work on the project, undergraduate researchers must complete CITI human subjects research ethics training. Time spent completing this training will be paid.
